25 Best Dog Foods for a Chihuahua That Needs to Lose Weight
My two just went to vet and both lost weight. One lost 5 pounds, the other 4. I cut back on the size of treats, subbing with fresh fruit sometimes. I also went from Science Diet Sensitive stomach to their healthy weight. I feed them 1/3 c. in the morning and add about 1/8 c fresh pet for small dogs at night on top of 1/4 c SD HW. As weather gets warmer, we will go for walks outside.

My little Chihuahua had major health problems so I made her food. Chicken was to hot for her so I used ground lamb. I would cook a cup of brown rice, fry and drain the ground lamb, dice up a can of rinsed mixed vegetables and scramble 5 fresh eggs. I would mix it all together and she loved it. I would portion it out into 1 cup freezer containers. I would put 1 in the fridge and the others in the freezer. It would last about 3 weeks before I’d have to make more. She was a real picky eater until I started making her food. She thrived until old age took her last November.

My chi mix was gaining weight from getting older and more content. We started feeding her cooked frozen green beans mixed in with half the recommended kibble. She dropped the weight and her coat is super shiny too! Also, bought the micro mini treats and not the ones for her size. Good luck to you.

The Vet had my dog on a 1/4 cup of there regular food with a tablespoon of canned green beans on top twice a day. The green beans have a lot of fiber and make them feel full for longer. He lost 4 lbs in about 6 weeks.

It’s all about calories..You need to find out how much weight the pup needs to be and how many calories it can have a day and than go from there. My dog likes pro plan weight management. I don’t give him any peanut butter anymore and and he really doesn’t get treats. I added green beans and other veggies to his food and it seems to be working.

My vet prescribed Hills Metabolic weight food and my chihuahua will eat that. However if you can’t get it to eat any prescription food you could try a couple of different things. You could try smaller portions of regular food with green beans added because green beans hardly have any calories and they don’t have any sugar in them you just have to make sure that if you use canned that you’re using no salt added. Or you can make your own food and boil hamburger or chicken with rice and vegetables. My chihuahua likes green beans and broccoli and carrots. And then you can substitute blueberries for dog treats because blueberries are low carb and low calorie and my chihuahua absolutely loves them. And then get out and walk them everyday

The type doesn’t matter but you have to measure the calories. There is an APP you can put your dog’s weight and it will tell you how much to feed them. Mine went from 14 lbs to 11.5. She is big and 11.5 seems like the right weight. She gets 1/2 cup of Royal Canin Chi food a day.

Hills metabolic has worked for my gal It takes time and unfortunately i had to be severe, as she fought me on eating a meal vs grazing (how all of mine have been raised). She is the first one ive ever had a weight issue with. Tough to fix. But not impossible. I also use dr harveys premix in the am for all of them with protein and oil of choice. She went from 7.2 to current weight of 6.6 (which is still chubby). She is also a senior, so not super active.
