Lost Dog Who Rang Shelter Doorbell Up For “America’s Favorite Pet” Prize

What’s one sign that the staff and volunteers of an animal shelter love the animals they take into their care? The animals come running back to the rescue even after they’ve found their forever home! Just like Bailey the dog did when she got lost from her new family.
Bailey had just left the Animal Rescue League of El Paso in Texas a few weeks prior and was happily settling into her new home with dad Micah Baier and dog bro Bill. But as dogs will sometimes do, Bailey got separated from her dad and brother. She didn’t fret though; she knew right where to go! And the dog lovers at the Animal Rescue League couldn’t believe who they found ringing their doorbell.

Ding Dong! Bailey’s Back!
As Micah slipped a new harness over Bailey’s head, she got confused and bolted. Micah called the Animal Rescue League of El Paso to alert them Bailey was lost. They posted an urgent request for help in finding the “friendly” dog and the search went on for days, with frequent Bailey sightings. But Bailey had her own rescue handled.

Without any help, Bailey made a ten-mile journey from the spot of her disappearance to appear on the ARL’s doorstep. But she didn’t just want to sit outside and wait, so she rang the doorbell to be let into the building!
“Bailey made her own way back to ARL, and rang our Ring doorbell at 1:15 am saying she wanted in,” shared ARL on Facebook. “Staff rushed to the shelter and put Bailey in her run. She was very happy, and we were too.”

The Rescue League called Micah and Bailey was reunited with her dad and dog brother Bill.
“Bailey showed she’s capable of anything,” Micah told KFOX14.

And Loretta Hyde, founder of Animal Rescue League of El Paso, agreed, telling KFOX in a separate interview, “These dogs are smarter than people give them credit for. How did she know what direction to go?”

Up for Top Spot
Now, Bailey’s cleverness has earned her and her brother Bill a spot as one of the top contestants in the “America’s Favorite Pet” competition. Voting closes within days, and soon, this smart pup will find out if she and her brother have claimed the title. The first prize winner receives a spread in Dogster Magazine and a $5,000 cash prize.

If Bailey wins the top spot, Micah plans on donating $1,000 of the prize to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, the shelter dogs love so much, they come running back! The rest of the cash prize would be spent on making the family’s van a comfy ride for spreading the word about the greatness of animal rescue.
